What Music Means To Me: by Sydney Amass
This presentation features specific songs that I have briefly researched and selected in categories of my age. The first song that I selected was from memory of when I was in primary school and around the age of eight years old. The second songs I selected were from memories of when I was a young teenager and around the ages of thirteen to fourteen years old. Lastly, I selected a current song that I have recently listened to and that is actually my favourite song at this moment in time.
Changes Over Time
The presentation above reflects what music means to me by showing to the audience three specific times in my life whereby I was interested in and listened to specific music genres. I am now going to write about the changes that occurred within my choices and why I believe that this had happened over the years.
My first song choice was a pop song by Jamelia. At the time, this was a very popular song and as a young child I would typically listen to songs that are on the radio or on the television. Due to its' popularity I happened to listen to this song many times and this is why I remember it as my childhood song. Due to my age, I did not have access to the internet and other technology as I was too young to understand how to function it. This is why I would listen to songs on the radio and the television because they were out of my own control: therefore the most popular songs would be the ones that were being played and, for example, when my mum would have the radio on in the car these popular played songs would be what I would listen to. The pop genre was appealing to me as a child because it is a funky genre that is great to dance to. In school I can remember creating dances to this particular song as the lyrics are very basic and do not have any underlying meaning: therefore as I young child there was not much for me to understand and the simple lexis choice meant that I could create simple dance moves on the spot in the playground.
As I got older technology advanced in many ways and by the time I was a young teenager my parents gave me more freedom to the technology available. For example, at this time in my life I had a mobile phone and an MP3 player. This gave me broader access to different genre's of music as it was in my own control. In comparison to when I was a child and I did not have direct control over the music that I listened to, I feel that at this time in my life the music that I listened to was slightly more a reflection of myself and my current lifestyle at that time. My second selection of songs were completely opposite to the genre of pop music: however the artists themselves were still very much popular within the music industry. My early teenage choices of songs were always parallel with the choices of my friends: where as in my childhood years I listened to the same music as my older and younger siblings. My most listened to genre of music at this time was rocky/edgy songs. These would differ from upbeat to down beat songs. My friends and I all copied each other with the different artists that we liked. If one person had a particular song on their phone, that song would be sent via Bluetooth to every member of our group. No one wanted to be left out: so even if you did not like a song you would still listen to it. I feel that my choices in genre at this point in my life were mainly due to peer pressure and that idea of wanting to fit in with my friends.
From my early teenage years to my late teenage years my music preference would appear to have changed dramatically. This is because in the presentation above my choice in genre went from rocky songs to acoustic songs that have a subtle tone. However, all of the songs that I selected were in the top 40 charts showing that they are all mainstream songs and therefore I can conclude that I have a very mainstream music style choice. Although my current song choice is mainstream, I often listen to songs that are not mainstream as I have access to the internet and I can purchase albums from shops if I feel like listening to a particular genre of music. I often find that now my music choice reflects my mood. I do not have a specific genre that I will always listen to. If I look through my music play list on my phone I will find a variety of genre's from dub step to house and even back to pop or electronic music.
Music Videos
This music video justifies my reasons for selecting it as my childhood song. From the very beginning the people on screen are seen to be dancing, smiling and having fun: this portrays my childhood lifestyle well. The beat is funky and allows the listener to dance to it which, as a young child, is what I wanted to do when in the playground at school.
This music video reflects my teenage personality. I was often moody and didn't socialise much with people at home and would typically be with my friends. In comparison to the Jamelia music video, Avril's has no dancing scenes. This reflects my lifestyle as at this point in my life I did not do dancing in the playground or at dance school anymore. The music video focus more upon a narrative idea and I would have enjoyed this as a young teenager who was being introduced to technology more and more.
WWW: Good detail into why you listened to these songs and their influence.
ReplyDeleteEBI: You should be clearer about the changes over time. Why has your style changed? Also, consider their videos specifically and their differences.

I have made improvements by being clearer about the changes that happened over time. I have posted underneath written paragraphs about this and have also looked at two music videos to make the task relatable to the overall project of making a music video. I now understand why these changes happened.
ReplyDeleteGood research into the songs. You have clearly explained the song you chose and why. You have discussed the reasons for listening to these songs and if you still like the genre and artist presently.
ReplyDeleteA way to improve this piece of work would to go into more depth as to why your taste in music has changed and how the genre's have changed through the years.
